It has its family name of Gekkonidae and it has its common names and regional names that originate from the loud sound of “To-kay!” Actually, this lizard comes from the family of geckos. As per its scientific name, it is given by none other than Linnaeus in the year of 1758.

The common and regional names of Tokay Gecko are as follows;

  • “Tokek” in Javanese, Indonesian, Thai and Malai

Tokay Gecko and Its Habitat

Tokay Gecko as a species mainly occurs in the Northeast India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and the Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Philippines and the Western Part of New Guinea in Melanesia. It mainly resides in the rainforest as its habitat.

It just lives on cliffs and trees and it longs to live in rural-based human habitations, ceilings and roaming walls at night while it searches for an insect prey. This may be considered as one of the most all-encompassing species in Florida Keys.

Tokay Gecko and Its Sound, Noise, Call and Bark

The loud croak is actually a signal of its mating call. The sound is often heard as a gekk-gekk, token, poo-kay whereas both the scientific and common names have been derived.

Even its family name Gekkonidae and generic name have been obtained. In noticing the call, it is exactly the same as the call uttered by a Gekko Smithii, the big forest gecko.

The call of the Gecko results in its slang name which is provided by the soldiers in the United States. This is in particular to the time of the war in Vietnam whereas it was named as the Tokay gecko.

Its loud voice is most observed to last for about forty-eight minutes. This was also noticed in the classic movie in India entitled “Pather Panchali” in the year of 1955. This was seen in a dramatic and unique scene.

Tokay Gecko and Its Morphs

The eyes of a Tokay Gecko are quite large as compared to a lizard. The similarity of a lizard to a Tokay Gecko could also be observed. Its appearance is somehow unique in a sense that it has its dots or spots that just make it a one-of-a kind species.

This is an unusual-looking and vibrant Tokay Gecko that is most often misunderstood by a lot of people. This has its slender body and this has its orange-brown spots that cover it. In addition, this has its flattened body and this has its limbs that are uniformly developed and well-defined.

The Patternless Tokay is a morph that naturally occurs and lacks the orange or red spots. Nevertheless, it has its white base and pale blue spots that just set it different from the rest.

This is mainly found and divided into three major types. This is also called in different names that exactly depend on the breeder; green with blue head, blue and red. Others also show their yellow bellies which are unaffected by being unfired or fired.

Granites & Calico/Pieds

For those black spotted Tokays, they are usually termed as Granite. They also vary according to the change of color to blues and grays. Pied and Calico name use also depends on the breeder. The name is still used for a gecko that best displays white patches randomly, and of different sizes.

This naturally occurs in the wild. And, granite is genetically tied to Pieds/Calico. The breeds that are captive start with normal coloring and changing into Granites and into Pieds. The majority of the granites can range from minimal white Pied traits and a whole lot more in different amounts.

Nevertheless, it is now a big issue if there really is Leucistic Tokay. This is mainly because of the fact that there are lots of Pieds that continue to lose their color until finally they are solid white or near white. The true Leucistic animal is born of a white color and is never changing.

Prior to the studies, two solid white Tokays have been born. It was only the one photo that proves the existence of one while the second has just developed the pattern.

Some Pieds and Granites change their color their entire lives while some just get back to their usually colors. They also do not leave any trace of being different.

Tokay Gecko and Its Size

A Tokay Gecko is fairly large as it belonged in the gecko family. As it reaches its stage of adulthood, it attains its adult size of twelve to fourteen inches as its total length. The males are usually larger than the female ones, both in overall mass and in length.

There are no known facts or little known facts about the life span of Tokay geckos in the wild. But as they are held as captives, they also have proved to be long-lived species.

Giant and Big Tokay Gecko

This is a big Tokay Gecko as it measures thirty-two inches in length and three and a half in weight. Also, this is quite a sight to behold for it really is species caught to impress curious animal lovers. Its appearance is also quite different from the ones mentioned above.

This is also another large gecko that lies on a surface. Its limbs are also quite large and its color is grey that highlights its orange-red spots. Its ears are somehow not noticeable and its tail is a bit long. But, so far, these are just among its desirable characteristics.

In this image, a gecko is shown and is held by a man. This exhibits such nice characteristic because of its good behavior. It just stays nicely and it behaves well.

The eyes are somehow not noticeable because of the photo. However, this appears so grayish and this looks uninteresting.

In the previous years, the adult species of Tokay Gecko has become a sought-after among other species. This is especially in the countries located in South East Asia like Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and more.

There were overseas buyers who just became interested in it. The buyers were also mostly from Western Europe, North America, Australia, Japan, China, Singapore and the South Korea.

The buyers are usually interested in buying Tokays that weigh over three-hundred fifty grams. The healthy one weighs over three-hundred grams and is used as a medication or drug for HIV infection. These have also been researched as an effective cure for AIDS.

It is also important to take note that “Tri-Hexapentaphenicol” is a chemical substance that is claimed to inhibit H1N1 virus and HIV infection. This is mostly found in the adult enzymes of a healthy adult. The substance is also found in certain body tissues and organs, venom and saliva.

The Medicinal Value of Tokay Gecko

There is not yet any scientific report about Tokay Geckos that are used and are effective in eradicating HIV infection. Nevertheless a lot of people believed that this specie is proven to be effective in curing venereal diseases like AIDS. Only time can tell if there is one thing that can cure AIDS.

It is also rumored that the size of Tokay Geckos, especially the marketable one can help treat AIDS.

Care Sheet of Tokay Gecko

Tokay Geckos can consume almost anything that they can overpower. Their diet is mostly consisted of other lizards and insects. They also do well on a mixture of roaches, mealworms, crickets, silkworms, small mice and more.

Setup, Enclosure, Cage and Terrarium of Tokay Gecko

The Tokay Gecko can be just kept in vivaria. Nevertheless, they may unleash their unhelpful fury in small-sized enclosures with some delicate decors.

They also appreciate space and they are arboreal. The ten-gallon aquarium is just mainly sufficient for an animal. And then, a twenty-gallon tank that is longer and larger is right for a pair.

The enclosure size for a pair exactly measures twenty-one/two feet long, one foot wide and two and twenty-one/two feet tall. The newspaper is also proven to be effective like a substrate. This is also easy for you to maintain.

The orchid bark or cypress mulch could be utilized in order to maintain its humidity. Even the sphagnum and Coco peat could work well. A three inch substrate layer can just be misted in order that the ambient humidity is increased.

This just makes it effective bedding. Moreover, a tokay loves a cluttered cage and it appreciates artificial and live plants, driftwood, sticks, caves and anything they hide in or climb on.

Hide boxes, fake caves, logs, tunnels, bamboo tubes or PVC also make perfect hideouts. However, there must be an enclosure that will give animals an opportunity to choose according to security and temperature. One of these should be provided next to the heat source and away from the hotspot.

It is also important to take note that Tokays like tightfitting hides. The adult ones also appreciate PVC that measures eleven and a half to two inches in diameter.  The baby geckos also enjoy it much hiding in small crevices.

They still have to be provided with a water dish in a cage. Insects could as well be avoided by placing an object like a stone or a sponge. Additional water need to be sprayed on it for it may ignore the bowl.

A Tokay gecko is a big eater. It is also more likely to consumer anything that attracts their attention. Roaches and crickets also make the most perfect staple diets. Avoid insects that have been exposed to pesticide and even super worms, meal worms that are of low nutritional value.

The adult Tokay Gecko consumes ten to twenty prey every feeding. The insects need not to be longer than the head of an animal. The growing juveniles and hatchlings somehow need to be fed on a daily basis for the maximum growth.

Hatchlings usually consume five to ten sized preys for every sitting. The insects need to be loaded with high quality foods at least twenty-four hours before they are offered.  A calcium supplement needs to be dusted on the insects after every feeding. This is mainly for the purpose of growing animals.

The females that will breed need to have an access to calcium supplement.  There are lots of Tokay Geckos that love to have fruits, baby foods, peaches, melon and ripe bananas. The fruits need to be eliminated after thirty-six hours that help avoid pests and mold.

Breeding of Tokay Gecko

The Tokay Geckos are indeed a good breeder. As long as the conditions are just right, the eggs will be produced on a consistent basis. The adults need to be paired up completely.  There should also be a heavy misting and a long light period during the spring season.

Others do not like each other. When one pair is already matched, you would find it difficult matching it with another one.  The Tokay that bond well will breed on a regular basis. There will be clutches of two eggs that will be produced every two months.

Incubation of Tokay Gecko

It is the male ones that guard the eggs. It will take thirty days for the gestation period. A pair of eggs is usually glued in a spot that is chosen by a female. When it is glued in the vivarium, never ever move the eggs because they are fragile. Just cover them with gauze.

The eggs that are glued to cage furniture could be incubated and removed at 78-87F. This will also hatch in thirty to two-hundred days that depend on the temperature. Determining the sex of a Tokay gecko by considering the temperature is not yet proven. There is still more research that is needed.

The Tokay Geckos, especially the young ones, are a miniature version of the adults. Thus, they need to be set up individually and in clutch mate pairs in small vivaria. You must have the same environment just like the adults.

You have to feed on the hatchlings on a daily basis. And, you must watch over the grouped babies for them not to compete with each other.

They need to be provided with adequate heat and food. They will also reach their sexual maturity in just nine months. The females also need to be at least a year in age before they are bred.

As per the bred animals help as captive, they are easier and calmer to work with. Many of the babies will bite. But, the bite is still less painful.
